5 Minutes with Paul

#How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it?

In one word, eclectic. From country to reggae, jazz, rock, pop, blues a bit of everything and I play it as it goes and I don’t like using a song list. Normally I just read a crowd and go with the flow. If I play with a band I try to stick to a list otherwise it’s a bit tough on the other guys.

#What made you decide to play music? Influences?

Coming from a very musical family, It wasn’t a choice I was born a musician and I don’t remember a life without it and there are times I wish I was something else. Beatles, led Zepplin, Neil Young and Pink Floyd.

#Who writes your original music?

I write produce and self record my own albums. I have co written a lot material with other musicians.

#What gets you in the mood for writing?

Tragedy, conflict, chocolate and listening to a really crap song that is roaring up the charts. Do you really want to know what the greatest motivator of all is? Money, just pay me and I’ll write songs all day every day.

#Where do you usually play? What would be your ultimate gig?

Pubs clubs parties wherever the live music venues take me. My ultimate gig would have to be one similar to the Rage Against the Machine gig on Wall street. Causing financial disruption, with a sub sonic bass that suspends all trading.

#Whats your best and worst moment on stage?

The 100 year anniversary celebrations for the Port Macquarie Hotel an eight hour performance to huge crowds all night long. Another memorable gig that turned into a two in one. After local band Temple were a no show for the upstairs room at the Cane cutters Hotel Innisfail, management asked me play upstairs after my solo gig downstairs in the bar area, fortunately a muso friend, Jason Hall had come with me that night and we teamed up for it. We had never played together before! We did 5 hours and broke bar sale records it was also the same night that the infamous disappearance of Angela Mealing occurred.

Worst ever was, my manager booked this gig at the Bellingen RSL for an Italian fest night. After setting up and settling down backstage my girlfriend and I spun the raffle wheel to guess how many people would show up, yep, just one person turned up. Organisers had overlooked advertising the event.

Only time I’ve ever felt guilty for getting paid and not having to play.

#Describe what you look like when you’re playing.

Depends what colour my hair is and if I’m performing originals or covers. You get the picture right!!

#Whats the game plan over the next 12 months? Any activities, recordings, and shows we should know about?

Going from being the fourteenth most viewed musician on you tube to number one.

#Finally, Who would you turn gay for?

Jack Sparrow AKA Johnny Depp
